Fall 2010 Workshop Schedule

September 10, 11 & 12 - Friday, Saturday and Sunday

2 Day Plein Air Painting in Oil Workshop with William Duffy

Friday Evening
6:30pm to 9:30pm
Tuition $290 (for those who did not attend the last workshop it is advised to take Fri. night for basic instruction)

During the two day workshop the artist will teach his approach to plein air landscape painting. This process includes the following.

Prior to each mornings’ demonstration we will discuss how to “see” and simply our subject.

I will use thumbnail drawings on toned paper as a means of simplifying the shapes in the composition to four values.

I will repeat the thumbnail process on a previously toned painting support using fast drying Wnsor and Newton Griffin alkyd pigments. Normally I’ll use burnt sienna, ultramarine blue,. Winsor yellow. and titanium white.

Once the tonal underpainting n alkyd is completed I will switch to oil paint and demonstrate, the role of color and contrast in the creation of mood, the role of simplifying value patterns to achieve unity and impact and how to achieve focus through, value and color contrast shape diversity, edge manipulation and thick and thin paint quality.

In the afternoon of each day all the students paint outdoors with as much individual guidance as desired.. A critique closes each day.

Those of you that did not take my January 2010 workshop are strongly advised to sign up for the Friday evening class where I will show the value and demonstrate the use of toned paper and toned painting supports.

2 Day Workshop - "Silk Screening: Creating a Scarf" with Noreen Mary Gaffney

Saturday 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Sunday 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Tuition $110

Materials fee up front: $45 – Teacher will shop for all materials. Since we are ordering supplies we must have a commitment by Sept. 25th.

In this 2-day workshop you will learn how to paint a silk scarf by your own wonderful design. The 4-stage-process is formation, design, dyeing and using a fixative. No steaming is required! We paint a fixer on the garment to permanently set the dye. This is called a gutta-resist technique.

This art style is extremely popular on the west coast where Noreen lived for 22 years. Once you learn this technique you can use this for many other things such as pillows, paintings, wall hangings, clothing etc. Class size limited to 6.

Noreen Mary Gaffney was born and raised in Rowayton where she lived for the first 21 years of her life. She then moved to San Mateo, California in 1977. There she studied at the Richmond Art Center in East Bay and then began to practice her skill of painting on silk. Since then she has been running her own business along with teaching and has enjoyed watching other artists emerge in this field.
